LAKE OZARK, MO - The YES on 5 Coalition has officially launched its campaign in support of Amendment 5, which would provide much-needed funding for childhood literacy across the state of Missouri.
Amendment 5 would allow for a new gambling boat license on the Osage River at the Lake of the Ozarks. All state revenues from this new project - which is estimated at over $14 million annually - would be required to go directly to early childhood literacy programs in public schools.
Since 2003, Missouri has dropped from 14th in the nation in early-childhood literacy to 37th. Amendment 5 creates a constitutionally-required, dedicated, annual funding stream for early-childhood literacy programs. YES on 5 would provide 53% more funding from current spending on early-childhood literacy - getting our state back on track and setting Missouri’s students up for success.
Other benefits from Amendment 5 would include:
- 700 New Good-Paying, Union Jobs - with year-round salaries and benefits
- Economic Growth for the Lake of the Ozarks Region - powered by new tourism and investment
- Improved Roads, Utilities, and Public Safety - funded by millions annually in local tax revenue
